Basics of Electrical Engineering and Electrical Measurement Technology

Research Focus

This lab is devoted to exploring subject matter covered in the lectures "Basic Principles of Electrical Engineering" and "Measurement Technology." Guidance is provided on exploring the curriculum topics; the theoretical principles are reinforced by insight gained from working on practical experiments. In one experiment this is achieved with a computer simulation and in seven other experiments with circuit configuration and measurement instruments. At the same time students gain understanding of a wide range of instrument engineering and learn general operating principles using the devices. Analog and digital measurement instruments, electronic data acquisition and screen output for static, stationary, and dynamic processes are included in the curriculum. An appreciation of errors happening in the real world which can be avoided at least in part though knowledge is also an important lesson learned. The limitations of what is possible must be recognized and responsible handling of (measured) numerical data is practiced.

Experiments


  • Working with an oscilloscope
    Working with this key measurement instrument in electrical engineering, from simple tasks all the way to the digital storage oscilloscope
  • Recording samples
    Collection of various slowly changing parameters; recording, displaying, and evaluating measured values
  • Measurement of AC and AC/DC signals
    Capabilities and limits of various measuring techniques with varying waveforms, in steady components and frequencies occurring in rectifier switches
  • Measurement of ohmic resistance
    Measuring bridges and their response behavior, sensitivity, and internal resistance; the impact of transition resistance
  • Using non-ideal measurement instruments
    Own consumption, manufacturing tolerances, reading uncertainty of measurement instruments; detection of and accounting for related errors
  • Examining an analog-digital converter
    The most important function steps of the most commonly used procedure in laboratory devices; capabilities and limitations of measuring DC without and with superimposed AC
  • Electric and magnetic fields
    The influence of various parameters on the electromagnetic field in a parallel-plate capacitor; evaluation of a discharge curve. Magnetic flux density and force on a current-carrying conductor; determination of a non-linear magnetization curve of an iron core
  • Circuit simulation
    Simulation of an AC circuit with RLC branches on a computer; representation of frequency response, phase response, and Nyquist plot; determination and discussion of characteristic quantities such as cutoff frequency, bandwidth and quality



As preparation for the experiment the theoretical principles of the individual experiments are prepared independently using experimental equipment and reviewed in a preliminary colloquium.

When the experiment is carried out, the self-accessed knowledge is reinforced in practice.

The experiment evaluation includes the further processing of the measured values recorded and the discrepancy observed between anticipated and measured values is examined and explained.

Unterlagen Sommersemester 2014

Ich möchte die Studenten die Ihre Versuchsauswertung EME 9 noch nicht zum ersten Mal abgegeben haben daran erinnern, dass der letzte Abgabetermin
am Freitag den 11.07.2014 bis 12:00 Uhr
ist. Nur dann wird die Versuchsauswertung in den Semesterferien kontrolliert.

Alle später abgegeben Unterlagen können nicht mehr berücksichtigt werden und führen zu einem Fehlversuch. Die bis dahin erbrachten Leistungen (Vorkolloquium, Praktikum) für diesen Versuch verfallen und müssen dann frühestens im nächsten Sommersemester wiederholt werden.

Coursework for Winter Term 2012/13

I would like to remind students enrolled in the GET III practical seminar in the winter term 2011/12 who have not handed in their experiment evaluation (EME 1, EME 2, EME 3) for the first time that the deadline for handing them is February 10, 2012. It is only possible to review the evaluations during the term break if this deadline is met.

Any coursework handed in after this deadline can no longer be considered for grading. All credits earned up until that point (preliminary colloquium, practical seminar) for this experiment are then revoked.
